Hi, welcome to the Round Earth Society, a Brazilian scientific non-profit educational organization. If the time of existence of the universe until today was converted into exatly one year, the Big Bang would have happened on January 1st. The Milky Way Galaxy would have appeared on May 1st. The Earth would have been formed on September 14th. Life would have appeared on Earth around September 25th. Sex would have been invented by microorganisms around November 1st. The first cells with nuclei, the eukaryotes, would have flourished on November 15th. The first invertebrates would have flourished on December 17th. The first vertebrates, the fishes, on December 19th. The plants would have started to colonize the land on December 20th. The first winged insects and amphibians would have flourished on December 22nd. The first reptiles and trees, on December 23rd. The dinossaurs, on December 24th. The first mammals, on December 26th. The first birds, on December 27th. On December 28th, the first flowers would have flourished and the dinossaurs would became extinct. On December 29th, would have appeared the first cetaceans and the first primates. On December 30th, would have flourished the first hominids and the first giant mammals. The first humans would have flourished on Earth only at 10:30 P.M. on December 31st. The first cities would have appeared at 11:50:35 P.M.. The modern arithmetic, with zero and decimals, would have been invented at 11:59:57 P.M.. The modern scientific method based on experiments would have appeared only at 11:59:59 P.M.. Mankind reaches a great development of science and technology, emergence of a global culture, means for the total self-destruction of human species, means to enlarge life spectancy, almost instantaneous long-range communication, the first steps are made on planetary exploration with probes landing in other planets and even leaving the solar system, all this only on the first second of new year's day. Without a doubt, in this new cosmic calendar, the moment when happened the most significant and fast change, was on the last second of the year, after the flourishment of modern science. A short period of time has passed since its birth, and even then, amazing advances on knowledge and comprehension of the world that surrounds us was reached using the scientific method. And each day, new advances are made, new boxes are opened and new surprises appear for our delight. However, during a short period of time, a time known as The Dark Ages, little progress was done using the scientific method. It started on the 5th century, when the Alexandrian Library was destroyed and Hypatia was killed by the Christian Church. The Dark Ages happened as a result of a system of thought, like science, that tries to explain the why universe is the way it is. It is called religion. Fortunately, The Dark Ages ended on the 15th century, nevertheless, some shadows are still remain, and the Round Earth Society was created to enlighten those places where the shadows of ignorance still existing and, sometimes, even flourish. It is a daring goal, but that is the way that any rational endeavour works: with daring and perseverance. Our page have been divided by topics in many distinct areas.
